About the author
Johan Steenkamp has been a chess coach for 15 years working both with individuals and teams. Several of his individual students have become national champions and some have achieved national and international titles. He has also successfully worked with the teams of the top chess schools in the country, has won the national team championship with various provincial teams and guided the national women's team to silver at the 2003 All African Games. Johan has represented South Africa in 2008 and his current FIDE rating is 2190. Between 2008 and 2009 he was the chess columnist for Media 24 and published in Die Beeld, Die Burger and Die Burger Oos-Kaap.
Currently Johan is based in Potchefstroom where he is employed by the North West University as a Post-Doctoral Research Fellow. He also serves the national chess body CHESSA as selector of national teams and the subcommittee of arbiters, trainers and managers as chief examiner for coaching levels 1 and 2.
